Cefic on EU 2050 climate strategy: keep us competitive and we will deliver

Europe’s Energy-intensive (EIIs) and Electricity industries have responded to the European Commission’s call for contribution to the EU Long-Term Strategy by commissioning or carrying out and publishing two critical reports examining and explaining pathways and scenarios for long-term EU greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions in industry and power generation to enable the low-carbon transition. Read more
Cefic LRI celebrates 20 years of advancing risk assessment Slower growth for EU chemicals sector 
The EU chemicals sector is posting slower growth, with production inching up 0.2% from January to September 2018 compared to the same period of 2017. Chemicals prices climbed 3.6% during the same period, while chemicals sales reached 3.6% through August 2018, their highest level in five years. Chemicals exports jumped 4.2% and chemicals imports 6.8% between January and August 2018. Read more
EU single market delivery challenge needs to be addressed 
Poor application of Single Market rules by Member States remains a challenge – according to the Commission’s state-of-play released last week. “Just as we are resisting protectionism outside the EU, we should resist fragmentation inside the EU”, said Internal Market and Industry Commissioner Elżbieta Bieńkowska. Read more
Cefic and CIA welcome draft Withdrawal Agreement 
Ahead of last Sunday’s special summit, which saw EU leaders sign off the UK Withdrawal Agreement and Political Declaration, Cefic and the UK chemical industries association (CIA) welcomed the draft Brexit accord as “another small step towards the much needed certainty that business has been calling for”. Read more
EU Court upholds right to keep glyphosate active substance data confidential 
On November 21, the EU General Court concluded that the Commission had lawfully refused access to certain regulatory data on the crop protection active substance glyphosate. Read more (Members only / your login is your email)
Commission presents final phase of Horizon 2020 at SusChem Brokerage 2018 
At the SusChem Brokerage Event 2018,  the European Commission provided a comprehensive update on the COM proposals for the Horizon 2020 work programme and forthcoming calls in areas relevant to sustainable chemistry.  Read more

The SusChem-supported Horizon2020 project VERAM (Vision and Roadmap for European Raw Materials) is now completed and its public project deliverables are available to download.

Protecting workers' health by calculating solvent exposure limits 
To enhance safety and health at work, two instructional videos explaining the Reciprocal Calculation Procedure (RCP), a method to calculate occupational exposure limits (OELs) for hydrocarbon solvents, have been produced by the Hydrocarbon Solvents Producers Association (HSPA), a product group of Cefic sector group ESIG, the European Solvents Industry Group. Read more (Members only / your login is your email)
Petrochemicals Europe pilots new ECHA process 
ECHA is currently preparing guidelines to help downstream users comply with the recently published NMP (1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) REACH restriction, requiring them to implement measures to limit workers’ exposure within two years. The agency has requested Petrochemicals Europe, an industry sector of Cefic, to actively contribute to the guidelines. Read more (Members only / your login is your email)

Inorganic coagulants industry contributing to circular economy   
Inorganic coagulants (aluminium and iron salts) are essential elements for water treatment, paper manufacturing, fertilizer industry and other applications.
By using inorganic coagulants in water and waste water treatment facilities, one third of the phosphorus used in Europe could be recovered and recycled. 
Phosphorus recovery is just one example of how our sector is applying circularity.
