Financing the chemical industry’s transition to 2050: How to attract investments for clean tech?

“The Innovation Fund could be the birthplace of the chemical industry's future", is how Marco Mensink, Cefic Director General described one of the world’s largest funding programmes for the demonstration of innovative low-carbon technologies during the European Commission’s 1st Financing Innovative Clean Tech Conference. Achieving climate neutrality by 2050, will require new technologies to be invented and invested in Europe, for which the Innovation Fund and Recovery Package play a key role.

Accessing the EU funding programmes will hinge on the potential for decarbonisation and the sustainable nature of innovative projects. In this regard, the EU sustainable finance movement has accelerated the development of a Taxonomy which would provide criteria determining whether an economic activity is considered sustainable, while ensuring no harm is done to EU environmental objectives.

Just this month, Cefic was appointed as a Permanent Representative in the EU Platform on Sustainable Finance, represented by Jelena Macura, Head of Sustainable Finance. With a two-year mandate, the Platform will advise the Commission on the development of such criteria, in addition to forthcoming sustainable finance initiatives.

An interview with Cefic Director General, Marco Mensink: What can we expect from the upcoming Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability?
Ahead of the publication of the Chemicals Strategy on Sustainability, Cefic Director General, Marco Mensink, discussed the regulatory shifts facing the European chemicals sector in a podcast interview with market intelligence outlet, ICIS. Marco warned that the upcoming strategy may imply a root and branch reform of REACH once applied putting the European industry a step behind in the global competition. The chemical industry has been systematically advising against such approach and highlighting the need of enforcement of existing regulation before creating new ones. Read Cefic's views on the CSS.

Industrial Emissions Directive Evaluation: Effective in reducing environmental impacts, deemed cost effective, and of EU added value
Over the past two years Cefic has contributed to the evaluation of the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED). The newly-released Staff Working Document has found that the Directive is considered effective in reducing environmental impacts and EU competitive distortion. It is well functioning and the benefits are deemed to outweigh the costs, with stakeholder groups considering it of significant EU added value. Meanwhile, the Directive could better target the European Green Deal (EGD) policy objectives. This evaluation will be central to IED announcements in the EGD Communication.
